Why terracotta works on walls
Terracotta's warm red-brown tones bring a natural, earthy feel to white, cream and pastel walls. Folk motifs (musicians, dancers, animals and deities) add story and handmade character. Learn about the tradition in terracotta handicrafts of West Bengal.

Hanging safely
- Use wall plugs and screws on concrete or brick walls; check the hook on the back.
- Hang at eye level (centre roughly 145–150 cm from the floor).
- Avoid walls that get damp or have seepage.
- Keep away from doors that slam, to avoid vibration.
Caring for terracotta wall art
- Dust with a soft, dry brush every week or two.
- Do not wash painted terracotta; wipe marks with a barely damp cloth and dry.
- In the monsoon, check the back for damp; see our monsoon guide.
Making a terracotta gallery wall
- Lay all pieces on the floor and arrange them first.
- Trace each piece on paper, cut out the shapes and tape them to the wall.
- Adjust until the spacing (5–8 cm between pieces) looks even.
- Mark the hook positions through the paper.
- Drill, plug and hang, starting from the centre piece.
