The best direction for a Ganesh idol at home
Vastu Shastra, the traditional Indian science of space, treats the north-east (Ishaan kon) as the most sacred zone of a home. That makes it the first choice for the mandir and for a Ganesh idol. North and east are also considered good.
A simple rule many families follow: place the idol so that when you sit or stand to pray, you face north or east. These are traditional beliefs rather than fixed rules, so adapt them to your home and your family customs.
Which way should the trunk turn?
| Trunk direction | Name | Traditional view |
|---|---|---|
| Curving to Ganesha's left | Vamamukhi | Most recommended for homes; associated with peace and steady prosperity |
| Curving to Ganesha's right | Dakshinamukhi / Siddhi Vinayak | Considered powerful; traditionally needs strict, regular worship, so more common in temples |
| Straight | — | Rare; considered auspicious in some traditions |
"Left" and "right" are from Ganesha's point of view, not yours.
Placement at the main entrance
A Ganesh idol or image at the entrance is a popular way to welcome good fortune. Traditionally the idol is placed so it faces inward to bless the home. Some families place two idols back to back at the door, one facing in and one facing out, because the back of Ganesha should not face the inside of the home. Keep the area clean and well lit.
Ganesh idol in the home mandir and office
- Mandir: keep the idol on a raised platform or chowki, not directly on the floor. Lord Ganesha is usually placed to the left of Goddess Lakshmi when they are worshipped together; see our Lakshmi Ganesh placement guide.
- Size: for home worship, a small to medium idol is traditional. Our idol size guide explains common recommendations.
- Office or desk: a standing or dancing Ganesha is often placed facing the room on a desk or shelf in the north or east of the workspace.
Mistakes to avoid
- Placing the idol in a bedroom, bathroom, under a staircase or next to shoe racks.
- Keeping several Ganesh idols together in the same mandir; one is usually preferred for daily worship.
- Chipped or broken idols in worship. Many families immerse or respectfully retire them.
- Letting dust, old flowers and cold diya oil collect around the idol.
Placing Ganesha in different rooms
| Room | Common guidance |
|---|---|
| Living room | North-east corner on a shelf or console, facing into the room |
| Study | East or north wall so the student faces east; a small Ganesha or Saraswati |
| Kitchen | Generally avoided for worship idols; a small image is kept by some families |
| Shop or office | Near the entrance or behind the seat, facing the door |
| Car dashboard | A small idol facing the driver is a popular custom |
Wherever you place Ganesha, keep the spot clean, well lit and free of shoes, dustbins and clutter. These are traditional beliefs; adapt them to your home.
